The latest ranking of the world’s best universities released Wednesday shows the United States’ traditional lead has slipped a bit.
The Times Higher Education’s annual ranking of the top 200 universities worldwide includes 63 American institutions, down from 74 the year before. The U.S. still has 14 of the top 20 schools, however. Times Higher Education, a London-based magazine, credited America’s slip to a “surge of innovative European and Chinese schools.”
Hello all, today there was an interesting article in the Chronicle for Higher Education related to our discussion on why college shouldn’t be seen as a commodity.

Hi Everyone,
President Obama announced yesterday that he was ending his two-year effort to have the government create a system that explicitly rates the quality of the nation’s colleges and universities, a plan that was bitterly opposed by presidents at many of those institutions. See more at my blog at: http://apicciano.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2015/09/13/president-obama-to-abandon-college-ranking-system/

Dear Colleagues,
In class on Tuesday, we discussed the possibilities of free community college. Yesterday President Obama pushed the idea as a follow up to his proposal during the State of the Union speech in January. For further details, see my blog posting at: http://apicciano.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2015/09/10/president-obama-pushes-for-free-community-college/
